Gateway National Recreation Area Print (The Sandy Hook Lighthouse)

Gateway National Recreation Area – Sandy Hook Lighthouse
Gateway National Recreation Area extends 26,000 acres through three New York City boroughs and into northern New Jersey. It is a place to play and relax in an exceptional setting and a classroom where people of all ages can learn about history and nature.

Pictured here is the lighthouse at Sandy Hook which has been in service since 1764. As the nation’s oldest operating lighthouse, it’s a prominent landmark for ships approaching Lower New York Harbor. The lighthouse is on the grounds of Fort Hancock and is just one of the unbeatable tourist attractions at Sandy Hook. The peninsula also boasts a spectacular holly forest, excellent surf fishing, hiking, beaches, trails, salt marshes, more than 300 species of birds, and other historical sites.
